American Legion Post 279                                       6 November 2018

Meeting was called to order 19:00 hrs, The Commander offered a prayer in the absence of the Chaplain, Pledge of Allegiance and POW-MIA Recognition was done, Post business was started.

Minutes were read and a motion was made by Bob Northrup. Seconded by John Sampson. Minutes were approved.

Legion Finances are as follows:

We had 19 members in attendance. 

The Commander noted that Robert Duncan, Richard Snodgrass and Ralph Scoggins have passed away.

The American Legion Sign repair work has been completed at a cost of $ 2,500.95

The concrete pad for the ramp and walk thru door has been poured.  Concrete cost was
 $ 742.

The Commander stated that he has already purchased 100 new chairs from Home Depot and has ordered 50 more to replace our unserviceable ones.  The old bar chairs have been sold to a bar on the square.

Joel and Frank have gotten the hallway painted and all of our military memorabilia transferred to the new display cases.  There are plans to sell the old case which is in need of repair.

Joel has also temporally fixed the back bathroom faucets until new ones can be installed.

The Queen of Hearts drawing has been doing well.  The pot is currently $ 2,300.  We are averaging $ 250 a week that we are receiving as the Legion.

The Commander noted that the bar is doing about $ 500 a day on Thursdays due to the Queen of Hearts.

The Commander noted that Toni, our Legion bar manager is doing a great job.

The Commander brought up that we as a Legion are donating 10% of the ticket sales to a local charity.  He asked the membership for input as to who to donate the money to.

Some of the suggestions were The Salvation Army, Scouts, Jacksonville Food Bank, and Local Schools.

Jim Carlton suggested the Lincoln Land Honor Flight.  He gave a brief rundown of how many veterans have been on the Honor Flight since it started 10 years ago.

1441 WW II veterans, 1628 Korea War Veterans, and 1041 Vietnam veterans for a total of 4110.   Currently the waiting list is approx. 500  6 flights are scheduled for next year.

The Commander talked about a meeting that he had with Glen Robson.  Glen wants to put together a veterans fishing tournament next summer.  He has 30 boats available with 2 veterans per boat.  Prizes will be awarded for smallest fish and largest fish at a banquet to be held at the American Legion following the Tournament.  A sign up sheet will be available at the Legion for any veteran interested in the tournament.  He only has room for 60 Veterans. It is free for the veteran.  He will be soliciting sponsors to cover the cost.

The Veterans Day Remembrance will be held at the American Legion on Sunday November 11th at 11:11 a.m.  The JHS Band will be playing.  Chili is being served after the event.  West Central Illinois Leathernecks are hosting the event. 

Jim Carlton reminded the members that the USMC 243rd Birthday party will be held at the American Legion on Saturday November 10.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Doors open at 5 and the cake cutting ceremony will be at 7.

There being now further business, the meeting was adjourned at 19:30 hrs.
