American Legion Post 279 1 November 2016

Meeting was called to order at 19:00 hrs, after opening ceremonies and POW-MIA recognition, post business was started.

Minutes were read and a motion was made by Bob Northrup and seconded by Chaplain Eason.  Minutes were approved.

The Finance Officer reported that our finances are as follows:

Under old business.  The Commander reported that Zeddie Bell had back surgery and is doing well.  Will take up to 6 to 8 weeks to mend.  Warren Moss has had an injection in his back and is doing much better.

The Rid All man has sprayed again, still has not giving an estimate for the new termite traps.  We paid $ 100.00 to the veterans in Springfield.  The craft show that was held at the Legion by the Auxiliary had 22 tables and our take was $ 110.00.

The Commander reported that he brought in his old deep freezer and it is now filled with bagged ice.  We should have plenty of ice on hand.

New business.
Getting ready to start Sunday Fun day.
Lisa Farmer had stated a lot of people would like a dance floor in the bar.  Jacksonville Floor Covering was contacted about putting a floor down in the bar.  The price of the new dance floor would be $ 1,900.  It would be an easy to keep clean interlocking floor.  Lisa has started a fund raiser and has collected $ 452.00.  This fundraiser will continue until the floor is installed.  Bob Northrup made a motion that we kick in the $ 1,500.00 remaining needed to purchase the floor.  Billy Stout seconded the motion.  Motion Carried.

The Woodson American Legion is hosting a supper on Nov 4th from 4:00 until 7:00.  Price is  $ 7.00.

The Veterans recognition at the JHS auditorium is on Nov 11th at 2:30 p.m.

The Leathernecks will have a Veterans Day service at the First Christian Church.  After the event the American will be serving chili.

Nov 6th there will be a flag raising ceremony at the new Cedarhurst Assisted Living and Memory Card Bldg at 1:00 p.m.  The Honor Guard will be there and the Mayor will speak.

On Nov 14th at 2:30 p.m. or Adjutant will speak at Cedarhurst about being in the military on Veterans Day.

Danny made a motion that we donate $ 25.oo to the Shop With A Cop program and to also donate $ 25.00 to the Toys For Tots campaign.  Seconded by Frank.  Motion Carried.

The Commander stated that while cleaning out some old papers at the Legion, he found a paper that promoted General Grierson from Captain to Major, dated 1861.  It was signed by Governor Yates, Governor of Illinois.  The Illinois State Museum believes it to be auththenic and would like to display it in the Military Museum.

A motion was made by Billy Stout that we loan the document to the museum until such time that they were through with it or we wanted it back.  We would also like to have them come look at other papers and documents that we have.  Bill Morrow seconded the motion.  Motion Carried.

Chaplain Eason spoke about the Civil Air Patrol,  said he would be glad to talk to anyone about joining the CAP, and would be willing to speak to groups about it.

There being now further business, the meeting was adjourned at 19:40 hrs.
