American Legion Post 279                                       6 March 2018

Meeting was called to order at 19:00 hrs, after opening ceremonies and POW-MIA recognition, post business was started.

Minutes were read and a motion was made by Henry. Seconded by Chaplain Eason Minutes were approved.

We were fortunate enough to have a member in attendance who has not been to a meeting since 1989 with us tonight.  Jerry Sanders – A Navy vet attended our meeting after being asked to not return in 1989,  He wrote a letter to the Commander a few months back expressing his discontent with the Legion.  After sitting down with the Commander he agreed to come back and Join us.  Welcome Back Jerry.

The Commander reiterated that since he sent letters to all of our members, that the traffic to our post website has picked up.

The Commander put together a box of supplies for our SGT AT ARMS Mike Morrow.  He is deployed to IRAQ.

John Turley is still recovering from his heart surgery.

Condolences to our Sr. Vice and his family. His Step Father passed away on Feb 17th The Legion sent flowers to him and his family.

Old Business:

The Sr. Vice updated membership on the progress of the kitchen.  He stated that the kitchen is almost done.  The water and drain lines are hooked up. The only thing left to do is put up the trim.

New Business:

Luke Marquard installed switches for the coolers so we can turn them on and off as we need them.  The cost was $ 175.  It will save us money by not having to leave the cooler on when its empty.

The Commander stated that there are still 44 members that have not paid their dues.  We have 220 members and 176 have paid.

The fund raiser for Todd Hayes raised around $ 43,000.  The front and back bar did well.  We generated around $ 1,000 after our costs.

The wrestling event that was booked at the legion has been moved to Illinois College.

The Commander reported that our finances are as follows:

General Fund                          $ 23,050.04

Bar Account                            $ 7,843.34

Membership                            $ 1,590

Building Fund                         $ 7,670.03

Total                                        $ 40,153.41

The Curtains in the Banquet hall that we use for storage are going to be replaced with excess table cloths that the Legion purchased from a wedding party.  Suzie Tapscott is going to hem them for the Legion for free.  The old ones are torn from getting caught on the table and chair carts.

The Kitchen is now being used for its intended purpose as a prep room.  The folks that put on the fund raiser for Todd Hayes were the first to use the Kitchen since its renovation.

The Sons of The American Legion will be having their meeting at the Legion on the 24th of March.

The Commander and Sr. Vice opened up a discussion about their concerns that we as an organization don’t do a whole lot for our local veterans. They stated that we cater to the general public more than we do for our veterans.  The Commander asked the membership for their input about how we can better show our support.  The membership as a whole decided that we need to get together as a group and discuss the matter further.  After much discussion, A motion was made that we would hold our next meeting at Ponderosa and hopefully generate more ideas on how we can accomplish our goals.  Chaplain Eason made the motion and Warren Moss Seconded it.  Motion Carried.  We will eat at 6 p.m. and hold our meeting at 7:00 pm. in the back room at Ponderosa.

There being now further business, the meeting was adjourned at 20:35 hrs.
