American Legion Post 279                                       3 April 2018

Meeting was called to order at Ponderosa 18:45 hrs, Chaplain Eason offered a prayer, Pledge of Allegiance was done, Post business was started.

Minutes were read and a motion was made by Bill Morrow. Seconded by Zeddie Bell Minutes were approved.

The Commander held an informal meeting as a change of pace to bring the membership together in a casual setting.

The Commander reported that our finances are as follows:

General Fund                          $ 26,799.80

Bar Account                            $ 11,668.22

Membership                            $ 1,590

Building Fund                         $ 7,510.70

Total                                        $ 47,568.72

The question was raised by Bill Morrow as to how much was left on the building mortgage.  The Commander stated that he would follow up with the figure at the next meeting.

The Sr. Vice stated that the only thing left on the kitchen is to put up the trim.  He has been going through some medical issues but will get it done when he can.

The Commander reported that roof leaked in the banquet hall and the kitchen during our last heavy rain.  The leaks have been temporarily repaired.

We have hired a contractor to fix the entire roof.  When it gets a little warmer out he will seal up all the holes and caulk the vents.  The cost of repairs are $ 1,500.  He is the same guy that is going to build our smoke shack on the west side of the building.

Joel DuPre who most likely is going to take over the SAL is going to help the Sr. Vice install the new faucets in the bathrooms.

The curtains in the back of the banquet hall have been put up.  Toni and the Commander put them up and they should last for quite a while.

The issue with the pot holes in the driveway are being addressed.  The Commander has been in contact with Moeller and Western Asphalt to get bids on fixing them.  Hopefully they will be fixed soon.

The SAL has 10 paid members.  They had a meeting on March 24th.  At that time they donated to the Gift to the Yanks program.  The SAL wants to become active again and help the Legion anyway they can.

The Commander talked about the Requirements to have a Legion Riders.  We need 10 members to start up a Riders Group.

The banquet hall is doing very well.  It is being booked several times a month.

As noted in the Finances, the Bar is doing extremely well.  Toni is doing a great job.

We have booked 2 Haitian Weddings of June in the banquet.  As you know that the last time we had them here, things did not go well.  We have decided to give them another chance.  The Sr. Vice spoke with both representatives and made it very clear that if things don’t go well. There will be no more.

Comedy show is happening April 7th.  All members get in free.  Toni has sold 50 tickets so far.  Tickets are $ 10.

The Commander passed around a brochure for people with either vision loss or hearing loss.  JACIL in Jacksonville is providing adaptive devices to help with the hearing or vision.  These devices can Bluetooth to your cell phone and they also have home phone devices available.  JACIL is interested in setting up a briefing at the Legion sometime in June to reach a larger audience.

The Commander also passed around a brochure from the Marine Corps League reference a St. Louis Cardinals game on Sat May 19th to honor MIA’s.

The 50th Anniversary of Vietnam Veterans are also to be honored at the Cards game as well.

The membership discussed ways to help pick up aging veterans who can’t drive at night to be able to attend our meeting.  It will be discussed more in detail later.

There was discussion that we as a Legion need to bring in younger veterans to the Post.

It was brought up that we could bring back the Early Bird Dinners.

The Commander stated that he would like to see more members volunteer their time to help out at the Legion.  There are a lot of things that needs to be addressed but cannot be accomplished without member support.  All of the things that need to be done cannot be done by 3 or 4 members.

There being now further business, the meeting was adjourned at 19:45 hrs.
