American Legion Post 279                                                     7 November 2017

Meeting was called to order at 19:00 hrs, after opening ceremonies and POW-MIA recognition, Post business was started.

Minutes were read and a motion by Bill Morrow and a second by Ron Hoffstadt, minutes were approved.

The Commander reported the finances as follows:

General Fund:                         $21,545.64

Bar:                                         $5,620.44

Membership:                           $1,400

The Commander reported that he and the Sr. Vice had talked with Lomilino Sign Company about finishing the Legion Sign on the north side of the bldg. He stated that the parts will have to be made in Quincy.  The Commander stated the if Lomilino would give him the measurements that he and the Sr. Vice would go to Quincy and get the parts made.

The Gifts for the Yanks items have all been ordered and should be in around the first week in December.

We now have stickers on our golf cart representing all branches of service as well as POW-MIA.

The range hood that was purchased by the previous administration for $3000 is gone.  It was taken to Jacksonville Iron and Metals for $108.

There is now a picture on the back wall displaying how the tables and chairs are to be put back after use.  If there are not put back according to the diagram a charge of $ 30 will be assessed.

The T-Shirts for the slot players are in.

The Commander put up a wooded flag display and various military signs up in the meeting room over the back bar.

The Legion signs for Morton Ave. were discussed.  The State does not handle that.  We would have to talk with the City Planning Commission.  There are no Veterans Organization signs located there.  The Sr. Vice spoke with Alderman Bill Scott, who is the Plans Coordinator for the city.  Mr. Scott said to address a letter to the Mayor in care of Bill Scott and he would try to push it through the council.

A motion was made by Bob Northrup and seconded by Ron Hoffstadt that we up our annual donation to the Gifts to the Yanks from $50 to $100.  Motion Approved.

JHS will be holding its annual Veterans Appreciation at 2:30 on 10 November.  All Veterans are welcome.

On November 11th.  There will be a Veterans Day Parade starting at  GodfreyPark going to Community Park.  At 1:00pm the Commander will be speaking to residents at Cederhurst Retirement Home.

The Sr. Vice brought membership up to date on the Kitchen Project.  He reported the the City Fire Inspector, the Plumbing Inspector and the Building Inspector were at the Legion to give us their view on what was necessary for us to be in compliance.  It was noted that we are considered a commercial facility and had to comply as such.  We would need to have vent hoods over our stoves.  Hopefully a microwave exhaust fan will work.  They stated that a laminate floor will not work.  A suggestion was made to just paint it and seal it.  The concrete in the Northwest corner will most likely need replaced.

Hoss Farmer said that he would help us with that if needed.

Some additional notes were mentioned about the kitchen.

Sink replacement is approx. $450.  A grease tap is $600.

Milnes plumbing is putting together a bid to complete the plumbing work.

The new grease trap will be put under the sink to save space.  We need to price a hand wash sink still.

The walls are still scheduled to be started in late November or early December.  That work will be the first thing that needs to be done.

We have two electric stoves that were donated to the Legion.  It remains to be seen if both get hooked up.

We have $6000 set aside for the kitchen project.  We have spent $1200 so far on electrical repairs and will be spending $2200 on the walls and ceiling.

It was mentioned that the walk in cooler door needs to be painted and to wood in the cooler replaced with Nudo board.

It was brought to the members attention that in the very near future we must decide on how far we want to go to finish the kitchen.

The Sr. Vice said to take it one step at a time and to do the work as we can afford it.

Several questions arose on the the cooler.  Do we really need to be using it?  Would we be better off just using two refridgerators instead.

The Sr. Vice stated that he would like to see everything done in a timely manner and as cheap as we can.

Ron Hoffstadt stated that he would check into prices for used and new sinks.

Projects to be done:

New ceiling in the bathrooms
Repair men’s bathroom wall
Paint the Commanders Office

A motion was made by Ron Hoffstadt and seconded by Bill Morrow to donate $ 50 to the Shop with a Cop program.

The Longmire Band is coming to the Legion.  The cost is $5.00 for a ticket and that will get you a free sandwich and chips.  A motion was made by Frank Marshall and seconded by Bill Morrow that any paid legion Member would get in free as well as any Legion event.  Motion Carried.

Our Sgt at Arms, Mike Morrow will be leaving for Iraq.  He stated he will be gone for 6 months.  He is to report the first of the year.  He stated that he would accept the nomination for Sgt at Arms for next year as well.  We wish Mike well.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 20:15 hrs.
