American Legion Post 279                      5 December 2017

Meeting was called to order at 19:00 hrs, after opening ceremonies and POW MIA recognition Post business was started.

Minutes were read and a motion was made by Ron Hofstadt and seconded by Louis Eason.  Minutes were approved.

The Commander reported our finances as follows:

General Fund                          $ 17,554.48

Bar Account                            $ 2,728

Membership                           $ 1,500

Kitchen Fund                          $ 7,875

The Commander stated that Joel DuPre that owns Same Day Denture had donated a large amount of money to the kitchen fund.

John Hembrough has also donated money for the kitchen project.

Commander and Sr. Vice will attend the January City Council meeting to discuss the Legion sign at the entrance to the city.

The Sr. Vice has updated the Legion website.  He encouraged members to use the website to keep up on Legion events as well as membership information such as meeting minutes.

A letter will be sent out to all members that we have an address for to welcome them back to the legion and to let them know what is going on with the legion.

The Commander stated that the men’s bathroom is in need of repair and we will fix it as soon as we can.

The Commander also stated that we need to focus efforts in the front bar.  We have a water leak on the north end of the building that may be from the front attic vent.

The Legion paid our Sgt At Arms Mike Morrows Legion dues for 2018.  He will be leaving for a 6 month tour in Iraq in early January.

The Commander stated that there was a good turnout for the Veterans Day parade.
The Legion received a letter from the Morgan County Health Department stating that we needed to send a person to a class to be trained and certified to run the kitchen.  The cost of the class is $ 180.

District 20 sent a bill for $ 51 to the Commander.  They raised the membership dues to district per member by 25 cents back in 1998 and our cost is $51.

The Sr. Vice talked in detail about the estimates and repair costs of the kitchen.  He gave each member a spreadsheet breaking down the cost of the repairs and the estimated cost would be $ 12, 254.   (Link to Spreadsheet is at the bottom of this page)

The Sr. Vice stated that John McCord is ready to install the drywall in the kitchen but we need to remove the lights.  We also have some of the old nudo board that is sagging that needs to be removed before the drywall can be hung.  This needs to be done by Friday.  If this is not done than the drywaller will not be able to start work and we risk pushing the project out further.

Milnes Plumbing and Heating sent an estimate to the Legion for the plumbing and grease trap.  The bid was $ 4,600.

A motion was made by Jim Turley to reject the bid and to get more bids for the plumbing repair.  The motion was seconded by Ron Hofstadt.  Motion Carried.

The mold in the walk in cooler was brought up.  We need to get a bid to have the mold removed so we can continue using the cooler.  If it not fixed, we will have to shut it down.

Jim Carlton asked about the kitchen.  Do we really need the kitchen?  He suggested that we purchase a 5 burner grill to be able to cook hamburgers and hot dogs outside.

Chaplain Eason suggested that we contact New Directions to hire people to help us with our project.

Jim Carlton suggested that we should just  fix the walls, ceiling and the floor in the kitchen area and use it as a storage room or maybe a meeting room and then spend the rest of the money on the bar area which is used everyday.

After much discussion on the kitchen,  Jim Carlton made a motion that we do not make the kitchen area into a full kitchen.  That we just finish the drywall and the floor and call it quits on the rest of the project.  He also stated in the motion that we fix the cooler and spend the rest of the kitchen fund money on the Bar Area.  The motion was discussed and seconded by Ron Hofstadt.  Motion Carried.  The kitchen project is done.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 20:15 hrs
